While attending college I would write bout buffalo in essays, term papers, journal entries, and so fourth. Though mentioned from time to time in various classes, it was unfortunate on my behalf that a semester-long course in buffalo was never an option. I desperately wanted to learn as much as I could and prepare myself for my first work-related experience with buffalo in North Dakota. Writing about them when the opportunity was presented enabled me to do so. One time while sharing with fellow classmates in an English class a writing I composed about buffalo, I was mysteriously accompanied by one of nature’s sound effects. As I was talking about the thundering of buffalo hooves, a rumble of thunder was heard outside. Though quite bizarre, the approaching and unexpected storm had made perfect timing!
Most of my buffalo-related writings have started off with “I love the land and the buffalo, and will not part with it” (Satanta, Kiowa). When I decided to learn about the name behind the quote, I discovered that it was derived from a famous speech given by Satanta, a Kiowa war chief in the nineteenth century. He was well known for his participation in the most brutal wagon train massacre in history, which occurred in Texas. In any case, I am currently working on having a memorial dedicated in his honor near the home of his decedents so that they may watch over it. I look forward to the resulting homage of this goal and hope many can appreciate it. Please visit the Satanta Project Photo Gallery for photographs of Satanta. |
